Funniest Moment of 2014: Mike Lonergan’s Hula Dance
The Mercer Bears were a stone cold lock to win this award with their various celebrations after beating Duke in the “second” round of the NCAA Tournament. Anthony White Jr. pulling off a Dave Chappelle inspired robot in the background of Rachel Nichol’s post-game interview with Mercer head coach Bob Hoffman was funny. Kevin Canevari hitting the NaeNae in front of the scorer’s table was downright hilarious. Just as we were etching Mercer’s name on the fictional plaque that they would have received for winning this award — Mike Lonergan happened.
Lonergan is the head coach at George Washington University. His Colonials recently spent the Christmas holiday in Honolulu at the Diamond Head Classic. Before a championship showdown with Wichita State, Lonergan decided to lighten the mood the night before the game by donning a grass skirt and a coconut bra while performing a hula dance for his players. There is no way I would expect you to believe this happened without producing actual footage, so you can check it out in the tweet above. It’s also worth noting that GW responded to this stunt by upsetting Wichita State on Christmas night and winning the tournament. I guess it was worth it.
