Is Dillon Brooks College Basketball’s Next Big Thing?

Steven Branscombe-USA TODAY Sports

With all the basketball being played by college athletes all around the world this summer, no one has generated more of a buzz than Oregon’s Dillon Brooks. After a promising freshman campaign in Eugene, Brooks looked poise to take a leap while dominating the competition at the FIBA U19 World Championships. As a member of Team Canada, he led his countrymen to their best ever finish in the competition while scoring 18.8 points per game (his average was 0.1 shy of leading the tournament).

  • The Ducks were expected to take a step back after losing the Pac-12 Player of the Year Joseph Young, but if Brooks is ready to carry the Ducks the way he carried Canada at the Worlds, the Ducks could be a contender out west. The Pan-American games should present a tougher test for Brooks, which means another eye-catching performance could create an even larger hype machine for the forward.

Oregon head coach Dana Altman may be hoping for a more low-key performance from Brooks. Considering his combination of height, skill, and athleticism, Brooks has the tools to emerge as a pro prospect before his four years of eligibility expire.

In the near future, Altman will be pleased with the fact that he will have another legitimate go-to guy in Brooks. He’ll team up with incoming freshman (and Greek U19 national) Tyler Dorsey to create a formidable young duo capable of causing problems in the Pac-12.
