20. 1982-83 “Survive and Advance” NC State Wolfpack

If you have ever watched ESPN, you’ve likely heard of the 1982-83 Wolfpack team. The term “Survive and Advance” was born after the heart and desire the team showed to win. They’re here because it is one of the greatest stories in sports history.

The squad was lead by Jim Valvano along with players Dereck Whittenburg and Thurl Bailey. After a mediocre season, the Wolfpack squeaked by their first round opponent on a path to the National Championship game. Their foe?

Phi Slama Jama. Goliath’s such as Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler were on this team, and they were the clear favorites.

But with time expiring, Lorenzo Charles put back Whittenburg’s long air ball to seal the deal, creating one of the biggest upsets in college basketball history. This team didn’t produce much NBA talent, but with capturing a National Championship, they surely deserve to be considered as one of the best.

Check out the 30 for 30: Survive and Advance if you haven’t already. Fighting the tears won’t be easy!
