3. Syracuse Orange

Jim Boeheim’s Syracuse Orange have quickly become the team with the most controversy over their resume.

People will likely use their six top-50 wins and 10-8 ACC record as reasons they should have received a bid. Others will discount their resume by looking at the Orange’s five sub-100 losses and 2-11 record away from home.

Syracuse is mainly a snub due to their success in the nation’s strongest conference. Their 10-8 finish was good for a seventh-place tie, and they finish a game ahead of Wake Forest, who plays Kansas State for an 11-seed.

Their disappointment this year, shows the inconsistency in how the selection committee decides which teams to include. Last year, their top-50 wins pushed a questionable Syracuse team into the tournament. This year, strength of schedule seems to be king, pushing teams like Vanderbilt and Wake Forest above the Orange.

People will always argue that teams get into the tournament on name alone, but looking at Syracuse’s situation this year, it is clearly not the case.
