2017 NCAA Tournament: Which Sweet 16 coach is most capable of winning championship?
Bill Self, Kansas Jayhawks
Bill Self is the best coach in the country right now. The 54-year old has led Kansas to an unprecedented 13-consecutive Big 12 regular season crowns. He also has seven Big 12 tournament titles, two Final Fours, and one NCAA National Championship (2008) on his resume. In addition, Self has numerous coach of the year accomplishments.
Kansas (30-4) may be the best team remaining in the NCAA tournament, and a big reason has been Self’s ability to develop players and his offensive philosophy of getting easy buckets on offense as well as not giving them up on defense.
Self also likes to get buckets quickly, thus the Jayhawks get out and run a lot. Kansas has scored 190 points in the first two NCAA tournament games and has scored 82 or more points in each of the last four games. They rank 11th in the nation in scoring, 12th in efficiency, 11th in effective field goal percentage, and fourth in three-point percentage.
Self is 413-85 during his tenure in his 14 years in Lawrence. The 2017 Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame nominee has made the NCAA 19 straight years, which includes three times while at Illinois (2000-03) and two of his three campaigns at Tulsa (1997-2000). Self has compiled a 618-90 overall record as a head coach that also includes a stint at Oral Roberts.
