Scott Drew, Baylor Bears

Scott Drew has done an unbelievable job making Baylor Bears basketball relevant. Especially, considering what has happened in the program’s past and overall in Baylor athletics over the past two decades.

Drew is by far and away the most successful coach in the Bears’ long history, which began in 1906. Drew, who is the third longest tenured coach in program history, is number one on the career wins list with a 271-173 record. He has led the Bears to nine postseason appearances, including a NIT championship (2012-13) and a NIT runner-up finish (2008-09).

This is Baylor’s fourth straight NCAA appearance and seventh overall under Drew. The 46-year old has led the Bears to the Elite Eight twice and is in the Sweet 16 for the fourth time.  Baylor has totaled 20 wins six years in a row and seven times overall during Drew’s tenure.

Drew is known as a terrific offensive coach, but it has been the Bears’ defense that has carried them this year. The Bears (27-7) defense is permitting 63.8 points a contest, which is the 19th fewest in the nation. However, the Bears are giving up 73.7 points over their last three games. What Baylor ‘s defense is doing best is, making teams miss shots — the Bears rank 20th in the country in opponent effective field goal percentage.

Drew spent one season as the head coach at Valparaiso prior to coming to Waco. He led the Crusaders to the Mid-Continental Conference regular season record and a NIT appearance in 2002-03. Drew owns 299-189 lifetime coaching mark.
