NCAA Basketball: Top 20 biggest tournament upsets of all time
6. Hampton over Iowa State – 2001
The Pirates finished the 2001 season with a record of 24-6, earning their first NCAA Tournament appearance. They beat Iowa State in the Big Dance, 58-57, after erasing an 11-point deficit. A big block with 1:50 left to play cut the deficit to one point and started to sway the crowd to the Pirates’ side.
The Pirates went on a 14-2 run to finish off the comeback in the last seven and a half minutes. They scored with seven seconds to go and Iowa State could not overcome poor shooting down the stretch.
The Cyclones had many opportunities to score late in the game but some poor shooting and good defense from Hampton kept the upset alive. They entered the game at 25-5 and finished the regular season ranked No. 7 in the AP Poll. It was just the fourth time a No. 15 seed defeated a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
