NCAA Basketball: Top 20 biggest tournament upsets of all time
17. LSU over Kentucky – 1986
LSU became the first No. 11 seeded team to make the Final Four after beating No. 1 seeded Kentucky in the Elite Eight. It was also LSU’s first Final Four in program history. On top of that, they became the first team to beat all top three seeds in their region.
They entered with a record of 26-11 and had met the Kentucky Wildcats three times before during the season. The Wildcats had a record of 32-3 and defeated LSU in all three meetings during the season.
The Tigers had been ranked earlier in the season, but the team dropped out a few games after conference play started and never returned. The Wildcats were ranked in the top 10 in each of the four meetings.
LSU was competitive with Kentucky throughout the season but could never pull out a victory. The fourth time would prove to be the magic number as the Tigers won, 59-57, to reach their first Final Four.
