4. Cyclones take down Oklahoma in double-overtime

January 21st, 2017: Iowa State 92, Oklahoma 87 (2OT)

The double overtime 92-87 thriller in Norman was a huge victory at the time. It helped the team snap a two-game losing streak early in the Big 12 schedule. It also solidified Deonte Burton as one of the Cyclones’ best closing options in crunch time.

The aforementioned Burton scored a career-high 31 points in the victory to go along with six rebounds and three steals. He had a particularly vicious dunk in the first OT period to tie the game that really helped spur ISU forward to the ultimate victory. He got plenty of help from his teammates (39 combined points from Mitrou-Long and Monte Morris), but Burton was truly the show-stopper in that game.

Burton’s dunk alone was almost enough to make it a top game, but what solidifies it was the team’s ability to win a grinder on the road. Oklahoma might not be the toughest opponent that Iowa State did battle with this last season, but a win is a win. This game was certainly a thriller for both teams, and Burton rising to the occasion was a sign of things to come for the Cyclones.
