Iowa State Basketball: Top five games from the 2016-2017 season
By Doug Winkey
1. Iowa State wins in the Phog over Kansas
February 4th, 2017: Iowa State 92, Kansas 89 (OT)
Winning at Kansas is the white whale of college basketball. Only ten teams have done it during Bill Self’s tenure. Iowa State is the only team to do it twice. That is how massive that win was in 2016-2017.
The 92-89 overtime victory was in doubt for a large chunk of the game. Kansas took a big 52-38 lead into halftime. It took 29 points from Burton, 25 from Morris, and 22 from Mitrou-Long to get ISU over the biggest of humps. However, the biggest shot of the game came from backup point guard Donovan Jackson, who drilled a three from the corner in front of the Jayhawk bench with under 30 seconds left in the extra period. That silenced the crowd and put the good guys up four. Free throws from Iowa State’s point guard sealed it and gave Steve Prohm his signature win in his second season at the helm.

Given how difficult it is to win at storied Phog Allen Fieldhouse, no other victory from the year can even come close in stature.

When all is said and done, Iowa State may not have won the NCAA title, but it was still a very successful season. The Cyclones ended with some outstanding moments for their season, including a NCAA Tournament berth. On top of at all, these five games were some of the best. The Cyclones lose a lot of talent heading into next season, but coach Prohm will do his best to get the team back into the Big Dance for yet another season.
