College Basketball: Breaking down the Wisconsin-Marquette rivalry
Team Success
This rivalry extends beyond just head-to-head play, though. Overall team success is very important as it shows how powerful a program has been in the grand scheme of the college basketball landscape. For both of these teams, they have had some tremendous accomplishments over the years.
National Championships: Both teams have one (Marquette in 1977. Wisconsin in 1941).
Final Four appearances: Both teams have three (Marquette in 1974, 1977, and 2003. Wisconsin in 1941, 2014, and 2015).
NCAA Tournament appearances: Marquette has made 32 NCAA Tournament appearances. Wisconsin has made 23 appearances.
Conference Championships (regular season and tournaments since 1940): Wisconsin has won nine conference champions. Marquette has won five.
Although Marquette dominated the past in terms of team success, it has been Wisconsin who has taken the throne as a national powerhouse over the past few seasons. Having made every NCAA Tournament since 2000, the Badgers have also made back-to-back appearances in the Final Four this century with Sam Dekker and Frank Kaminsky.
There have been several incredibly talented players to play at both Wisconsin and Marquette, and that has resulted in some pretty spectacular achievements by the two programs.
