Pac-12 Basketball: Breaking down the 2017-18 star on each team in the conference
By Connor Hope
Arizona State Sun Devils – Tra Holder and Shannon Evans
This may be cheating, but Arizona State has two stars that it will rely on to compete in the Pac-12 this year. Despite having a relatively inexperienced frontcourt, the Sun Devils have one of the more reliable backcourts in the conference.
Both Tra Holder and Shannon Evans provide head coach Bobby Hurley with a backcourt that could compete with most teams in the country. As both players rank in the top-10 of returning scorers in the Pac-12 (Holder – 16.2 points, Evans – 15.0 points), it is tough to predict who will be better this year. While Holder is a slightly better scorer and rebounder, Evans provides ASU with better perimeter defense and more assists.
Both players are seniors and will be looked at to take over as leaders for Torian Graham, who was the Sun Devils leading scorer last year. There is plenty of talent around them, but the team’s lack of experience and depth could pose an issue.
The biggest reason why it is almost impossible to pick between the two is the way they work in tandem to help Arizona State win. With Graham gone, Evans and Holder will need to play off each other if Arizona State wants to improve.
