Appalachian State Mountaineers – JR Ronshad Shabazz

In what was otherwise a disappointing season for App State, Shabazz provided the most of the excitement. In over 31 minutes played per game, the then sophomore averaged 16.7 ppg and added three and a half boards to go along with it.

Late January this past season, Ronshad put in two spectacular performances, first dropping 36 on the road at Georgia Southern. A week later he had 33 up against the regular season champion Texas Arlington.

His efforts were rewarded with being selected as a third team All-Conference performer for the season — all the more impressive if you consider that he was the only player to average double figures last year on the team.

His ability to perform in big games was noticed early on when, as a freshman, he scored 21 points on the road against a top ten team in North Carolina.

The one flaw Shabazz has in his game is that while he can be a volume scorer, he’s a volume shooter as well. Last year he shot just under 40% from the field and 32.8% from long distance. Although, it can be explained by the lack of viable scoring options surrounding him.

The Mountaineers finished next to last in the standings overall, and, unless another player steps up, it won’t matter how much Ronshad scores next season.
