Sun Belt Basketball: Who are the stars for every team in 2017-18?
Georgia Southern Eagles – JR Ike Smith and SR Tookie Brown
Ike Smith is the returning leading scorer of the entire conference just under 20 points per game. He increased his scoring output almost eight whole points to 19.6 ppg and 12 percentage points in filed goal percentage to .495.
His contribution of 61 threes helped the Eagles lead the conference in over nine threes made per game this past year, including eight in one game at Lafayette.
The second leading scorer in the conference actually comes from the same team. 5’11 guard Tookie Brown averaged just over 17 points per contest, similar to his freshman season the year prior. The junior’s’efficiency is less than his teammate, but his consistency is paramount for both guards to compete at a high level.
This could be the best opportunity the Eagles will have to win the Sun Belt. Brown will be graduating after this season and Smith will be a prime candidate for becoming a grad transfer himself. With very few viable of options outside of these two the window could all but shut after this year.
Georgia Southern are just a frontcourt asset away from truly competing for a conference championship. Until then, the guard line will have to continue its massive production to remain a contender.
