WAC Basketball: Who is the star player on each team in 2017-18?
Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners – JR Damiyen Durham
The last couple of years have been the greatest in the basketball history of the school. Two years ago they won the conference tournament to clinch their first March Madness bid in school history. The following year they won their first regular season title in their WAC history.
Last year the team was veteran laden with seniors Jaylen Airlington (14.5 ppg) and Dedrick Basile (12.6 ppg) leading the way. With both gone, however, someone will have to step up to not only provide scoring but fill the leadership void as well.
Enter Damiyne Durham.
The then sophomore did well as a supporting actor, providing 13 points a contest. While for the most part he played the third or even fourth option on the field, there were moments Durham displayed his offensive talents. The 30 points scored against UC Santa Barbara will hopefully be an indicator of the future for the Roadrunners.
The key for Cal State Bakersfield will not just be replacing the offense that’s graduated, but their decisive impact as well. Out of eight teams Cal State only finished sixth in scoring. The key was that they were by far the best defensive team, finishing either first of second in all conference defensive categories.
If Damiyne can increase his offense along with becoming the anchor for the team on defense, the Raodrunners will be good to go next year.
