Big 12 Basketball: Who is the 2017-18 star player on each team in the conference?
TCU Horned Frogs – Alex Robinson
11.2 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 5.8 apg, 1.5 spg, 33 3P% (39 makes)
There are a handful of reasonable choices for TCU’s best player. Center Vladimir Brodziansky was the team’s leading scorer, forward Kenrich Williams is a consistent double-double threat, and guard Jaylen Fisher had a standout freshman campaign, but Alex Robinson had the biggest impact.
Robinson started his career at Texas A&M, but transferred to TCU after his freshman season. In his first year with the Horned Frogs, Robinson earned a starting role and led TCU to a NIT championship. His best skill is his passing and his 5.8 assists per game were third in the conference, only behind Monte Morris and Jawun Evans, who are now in the NBA.
Robinson is not only a distributor, he is also a capable scorer. The 6’1″ junior is TCU’s go-to guy on offense and he has the ball in his hands more than any of his teammates. Robinson was third on the team in scoring at 11.2 ppg, but also led the team in field goal attempts. This shows how involved Robinson was in TCU’s offense and the importance of his contributions.
TCU is poised to finish in the top half of the Big 12 and break into the NCAA Tournament this season. If Robinson maintains his strong assist numbers and his double-figure scoring average, he will have a strong case for First Team All-Conference. The Horned Frogs have a more balanced team than many of their conference foes, but Robinson still stands out as their biggest contributor.
