Fresno State basketball: 2017-18 preview for the Bulldogs
Starters
SR Jahmel Taylor
The former Washington Huskie will bring up the ball most of the time. His biggest asset is his shooting, with his 81 threes leading the team. He will need to distribute the ball more, as his 1.8 apg average won’t cut it next season.
JR Deshon Taylor
The other Taylor was second in the league in scoring at 12.5 ppg. He split last season either starting or coming off the bench as the sixth man. The 6’3 guard shoots around 40% from three, but with previous experience coming off the bench, it could allow the coaching staff to experiment if things need tweaking.
SR Jaron Hopkins
The all-around best player on the team, Hopkins led the team in scoring (13.2), rebounding (5.5), and passing (3.6). Hopkins can play anywhere on the court — even the “small four if the team wants to go small. The only weakness he has in his game is his perimeter shooting, which at 24% is certainly a work in progress. But, if he can improve in that area of his game, he may be a dark horse candidate for MWC Player of the Year.
SO Bryson Williams
In somewhat limited minutes, Williams had a very productive first year with the school. He displayed an ability to score, with 18 against a great defensive team in San Diego State. One issue in playing Williams at the power forward spot is that he’s a post player only.
SR Terrell Carter
With 265 pounds holding him up, Carter is by far the biggest player on the team. He had a breakout moment at Marquette, with 21 points. However, in conference play, he only reached double figures once. Like Williams, Carter doesn’t stretch the floor so there’s a question as to whether both will play much at the same time — especially with the abundance of guards at disposal for the staff.
