Expectations for the season

The consensus of most people is that Nevada is the front-runner to win the Mountain West with San Diego State not far behind. One was the best offensive team while the other was supreme on the defensive end. However, both were below average on the other side of the court.

That’s where Fresno comes in. They ranked fourth in both scoring offense and defense in the conference, and that kind of balance will pay dividends in the long run.

The roster also sets up for success against a variety of opponents. They can use a big lineup against a frontcourt like San Diego State. Then, when it comes to “position-less” basketball used by the Wolf Pack, they can match up athlete for athlete. Hopkins has played well against the likes of Jordan Caroline and Chandler Hutchinson and will be the man chosen to shut them down on defense.

A key will be the development of the frontcourt, whether they play together or separate. If these guys can become scoring threats, it opens things up for the guards to do even more damage.

The additions of Huggins and Bowles should sure up their biggest weakness from last season, perimeter shooting. Many aren’t picking the Bulldogs to win the Mountain West this year, but, based on their performances from last year and who’s on the roster this year, they have good shot at doing so. Ignore this team at your own peril.
