Season Expectations

Despite losing some important pieces from last season’s Sweet 16 team, the West Virginia Mountaineers appear to be one of the best teams in the country. This team should once again use their insanely effective press defense to frustrate teams and force a lot of transition buckets.

Unlike some West Virginia teams in the past, this year’s team should continue last season’s offensive success. With the combination of their stifling defense and solid offense, West Virginia will be one of the toughest teams in the country. They might not be a clear title contender, but the Mountaineers may be one of the toughest teams to beat in college basketball.

We can expect Esa Ahmad’s early absence to make an impact in the non-conference, during which the Mountaineers may lose 2-3 games. West Virginia will have an even tougher spring, facing very tough Big 12, as well as Kentucky.

The star for West Virginia will be their senior guard Jevon Carter. Not only will Carter be one of the best defenders in the country, but he will also be a contender for All-American honors. Heading into the season, West Virginia is ranked No. 12 on Busting Brackets’ Top 25, and ranked No. 2 in the Big 12 Preseason Power Rankings.
