68 reasons to be excited for the 2017-18 college basketball season
4. New coaches…new coaches everywhere!
In recent years, college basketball fans have seen several coaches decide to pack their bags from a lower program and move up the coaching ranks. This has become commonplace in the college basketball landscape, but this offseason was one of the worst. Programs like Ohio State and Indiana said goodbye to their head coaches and picked up some of the best rising coaches in the country in Chris Holtmann and Archie Miller.
The list of schools with new head coaches is extremely long and features some of the top programs in the country. These coaching changes are often a project that takes multiple years for a transitioning program due to the need for the new coaches to bring in and develop their own recruits.
Still, a lot of the schools who have new head coaches have fanbases that are accustomed to success and seeing a couple of down years could cause an even bigger coaching carousel sooner rather than later. This is a scary time to be a mid-major with a top head coach. Just this offseason, we saw mid-major coaches such as Will Wade and Kevin Keatts leave their respective schools. These were tough losses for their schools and it is only a matter of time before more coaches find an opening to make the leap to a high-major conference.
