NCAA Basketball: National Player of the Year Rankings after Week 1
By Connor Hope
5. Trevon Bluiett, Xavier
25.5 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists
There have been a lot of solid early season starts from players in the Big East, but Xavier guard Trevon Bluiett has looked the best. His size has allowed him to score and rebound with ease against Morehead State and Rider, but it remains to be seen how he performs in the very physical Big East Conference. He definitely passed his first test with a ridiculous late-game performance against Wisconsin.
4. Grayson Allen, Duke
25.7 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2 assists
After two years of waiting, we may finally be seeing a Grayson Allen who will be a mature leader for a solid Duke Blue Devils team. His performance against the Michigan State Spartans, in which he scored 37 points, is the most impressive individual game so far in this young season. If Allen can continue to perform at a high level, keep his composure, and continue to elevate his young teammates, he will be in the top five all year.
3. Allonzo Trier, Arizona
31 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3 assists
Allonzo Trier had perhaps the best scoring performance of any player in the country over the first week of the season. Trier scored over 30 points in each game as the Arizona Wildcats went on to score over 100 points as a team. Trier is also contributing pretty solid rebounding and assists numbers for a guard who primarily works off the ball.
2. Bonzie Colson, Notre Dame
22.5 points, 12 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks
While Notre Dame forward Bonzie Colson was solid in the first game on the road, his performance in the Irish’s home opener against Mount Saint Mary’s solidified his number two spot. During the game against the Mountaineers, Colson had 27 points, 11 rebounds, 3 blocks, and 3 steals. Despite being such a high usage player and competitive defender, Colson’s low turnover and foul numbers allow him to stay on the court for most of the game.
1. Miles Bridges, Michigan State
19.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3 assists, 3.5 blocks
Michigan State sophomore forward barely hangs on to the top spot in these rankings, despite the huge opening week performances by Allen, Trier and Colson. Bridges has been a monster on both ends of the court for the Spartans, and his ability to stretch the floor kept the game against Duke close. If Bridges can clean up his turnover issue, he will be perhaps the most important player on any major-conference team.
Next: Key Takeaways: Duke beats Michigan State
That finishes the Busting Brackets’ Week 1 Player of the Year power rankings for the 2017-18 season. Check back next week for the Week 2 update.
