NCAA Basketball: 10 takeaways from Week 3
By Taylor Sturm
Ah, the perennial mid-major god that is the Gonzaga Bulldogs.
After their first ever National Championship appearance, the Bulldogs lost several key pieces and were expected to take a slight step back. In fact, Saint Mary’s was pegged by many to steal the WCC from Gonzaga, but the good news for the Bulldogs is that the Gaels have looked shaky so far to say the least.
So naturally, despite lower expectations, Gonzaga has looked like the best mid-major in the country.
At 5-1, their lone loss comes to the Florida Gators, who might be one of the top three or so teams in college basketball. Even then, this loss was in overtime, so, if you are a Zags’ fan, you have to be feeling really good about yourself.
Some tough match-ups are coming up soon with Creighton and Villanova, but the win against Texas will have given this team a ton of confidence. Villanova struggled with Western Kentucky and Tennessee, and Gonzaga could pull off the upset in the Jimmy V Classic.
When it comes to mid-majors in college basketball, there are two things you never want to do: Face MTSU in the first round of the NCAA Tournament or underestimate Mark Few and the Bulldogs.
