LSU: Waters’ play AFTER Maui will define draft stock
Let’s face it, LSU, as most of the SEC, may not make the NCAA Tournament this March. Regardless, this does not influence Tremont Waters NBA potential.
Wednesday night, the freshman from New Haven, Connecticut, scored a career-high 39 points against Marquette, which included five triples and an efficient 13-of-22 shooting performance.
Oh, and not to mention, the game was televised on ESPN2.
Although LSU fell to Marquette for their second loss in two days, Walters play cannot be overlooked. For many college basketball fans, “Feast Week” is a time to get acclimated to the talented new faces, aka freshmen, that have advanced from the high school ranks. Walters is, obviously, no different.
In non-conference play, Walters will have no issue averaging around 20 points per game. During SEC competition, everything could change.
The Tigers open the conference schedule facing arguably four of the best five teams, including No. 8 Kentucky at home and No. 16 Texas A&M in College Station. Along with the two ranked opponents, Arkansas and Alabama dot the first four games. All four squads have athletes, and all four have the potential to inhibit Walters.
Similar to the past draft class, prospects claim a stake in high-profile matchups, such as De’Aaron Fox versus Lonzo Ball. Hence, battles against Kevin Knox and current SEC leading scorer Collin Sexton will influence Walters’ value among scouts.
Though, these opportunities are a month away. Today, let’s marvel at Waters’ latest performance and the high praise from opponent Sacar Anim.
“He’s definitely one of the best players offensively that I’ve played,” said Marquette’s swingman following the third-place game. “He’s really quick, and now he’s really smart. He was really tough, I had a tough job all night.”
