Big East Basketball: Power ranking the conference (Nov. 22 – Nov. 28)
As discussed last week, Marquette opened their play in the Maui Invitational with a win against VCU followed by a loss to Wichita State in the second round. At the start of this week for the power rankings, Marquette’s first battle was the third-place game of the Maui Invitational against LSU. With five players scoring in double-figures (including 30 from Andrew Rowsey), the Golden Eagles were able to come away with this big win over a fellow major-conference opponent.
After returning home from Hawaii, the program had a rough day on Nov. 27. To start things off, junior Haanif Cheatham announced that he would be leaving the program due to personal reasons. Head coach Steve Woj had this to say about his departure from the team (Source: Journal Sentinel):
"“Haany and I met over the weekend and he informed me that he had a family matter. Obviously, I’m not at liberty to discuss that publicly. But he felt like it was in his best interest to move closer to home, to be near his family during this time. We certainly wish Haany the best.”"
After that was announced, the team played a home game that night against Eastern Illinois. Although this game should have been an easy win for the Golden Eagles, they struggled to put away the Panthers all night long. In fact, Marquette needed overtime and 30 points from Sam Hauser to pull out the 86-83 victory.
Schedule for this week:
- Chicago State (2-7) at Marquette on Nov. 29
- Georgia (5-1) at Marquette on Dec. 2
- Vermont (5-1) at Marquette on Dec. 5
