NCAA Basketball: 5 best mid-major teams so far this season
1. Gonzaga Bulldogs
This ranking comes as no surprise as the Bulldogs are ranked the highest out of any mid-major team at No. 12 in the country. The Zags are looking to avenge their National Championship loss from a year ago, although they lost some key pieces from last year’s squad.
Mark Few’s bunch has started off the season solid again, losing to only Florida and Villanova so far, both of which are ranked in the top-10. Gonzaga has picked up some other quality wins, though. The Zags have defeated Ohio State (86-59), Texas (76-71 OT), and Creighton (91-74) so far this season.
Led by veterans Jonathon Williams (14.7 ppg, 6.1 rpg) and Josh Perkins (14.4 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 4.4 apg), the Bulldogs currently rank 12th in the nation in scoring offense at 90.6 points per game. Other key players include Killian Tillie (11.7 ppg, 6.6 rpg), Zach Norvell Jr. (11.3 ppg), and Silas Melson (11.1 ppg). The Zags are likely to make another solid run in the tournament this year.
Upcoming Schedule:
- Gonzaga at Washington (7-2) on Dec. 10
- North Dakota (4-4) at Gonzaga on Dec. 16
There is still plenty of time this season for other mid-majors to surprise people, but these are the five that are currently doing the most. How many of these will end up making their mark in March like Gonzaga did last season?
