Big 12 Basketball: Where are Trae Young and the Sooners ranked after the WVU loss?
As the only winless team in the conference, the Cyclones have no choice but to be last. It’s not for a lack of effort, as the team lost both games in extra time. Each game was similar, with Iowa State running out of gas at the end.
In the loss to Texas, Cameron Lard was the team’s best player, coming off the bench with 21 points and 16 rebounds. He helped the undersized Cyclones out-rebound the bigger Longhorns team, 50-41. Lindell Wigginton had a night to forget with just four points on 2/11 shooting.
Donovan Jackson had his best scoring week of his career, with 24 points in the Texas game before dropping a career-high 30 in the Oklahoma State defeat. He helped put the Cyclones in position to win, leading by four points with over a minute to go before mistakes allowed the Cowboys to tie it in regulation.
The bench struggled in this one, shooting a combined 5/24 from the field. Nick Weiler-Babb nearly had a quadruple-double, with 12 points, nine boards, 11 assists and seven turnovers. He also had similar numbers while playing all 45 minutes in the Texas game as well.
What makes things all the more dire for Iowa State is that all three losses were against teams in the bottom half of this league, meaning that the heavyweights are on the way. It’s a shame because this is a good team with potential for the future, but there’s a strong chance that they’ll still be winless in next week’s rankings.
