Big 12 Basketball: Where are Trae Young and the Sooners ranked after the WVU loss?
While some teams are losing players, the Bears are getting theirs back, with a couple of key frontcourt players returning. Terry Maston and Jo-Lual Acuil both missed time last week, but came back to have a big game in the overtime loss to TCU. Acuil was dominant down low with 28 points and 11 rebounds, while Maston came off the bench for 20 points and nine boards himself.
With production like that, Baylor would normally win. However, the starting perimeter for Scott Drew’s team was as bad as could possibly be. King McClure went scoreless on six field goal attempts and star senior Manu Lecomte went 1/11. Anything more out of the guards and the Bears would’ve won that game.
Lecomte did do better in the game against Texas, going 5/14 for 17 points, the same number Acuil had as well. It was just enough to beat the Longhorns, who are actually worse on offense than the Bears. Baylor’s defense did play a role in the win, holding Texas to just 35% shooting in the game and scoreless in the final minutes.
But the story in the first three Big 12 games continues to be Lecomte, whose been underperforming as of late. Baylor has no shot for a top-five finish if he doesn’t perform at the All-Big 12 level we’re accustomed to.
