NCAA Basketball: 5 most significant injuries of the season
3. Jaylen Fisher, TCU
One of the most recognizable players in college basketball, Jaylen Fisher was a key to TCU’s resurgence this season. The sophomore couldn’t prevent his second practice knee injury on Tuesday, however, requiring season-ending surgery on Thursday.
To this point, Fisher averaged 12.3 points and 5.4 assists per game, the latter ranking in the top five of the Big 12. He just dropped a career-high 22 points in a loss to Oklahoma a week ago.
Junior point guard Alex Robinson stepped up in a major way on Thursday, dishing 17 assists in his first start since the injury. With senior star Vladimir Brodziansky leading the way, there’s still plenty of firepower for TCU to work with.
Yet it still feels like a crushing blow for the Horned Frogs. Last year, they reigned atop the second-most important postseason tournament, the NIT. This season, they appeared destined to snap a 20-year absence from the NCAA Tournament.
They still might. They’re lurking just outside the AP Top 25. But entering Saturday’s game against Kansas State, the Horned Frogs are just 2-4 in conference play, with two dates each against West Virginia and Texas Tech still on the schedule.
Even if they do snap their NCAA Tournament drought, the loss of Fisher will likely spell a quick exit for Jamie Dixon’s team.
