Big East basketball: Mid-season recap, awards and Bracketology
Second team All-Big East
SR Marcus Foster – Guard, Creighton
2017-18 stats: 19.9 ppg 3.5 rpg 2.8 apg
Last season, Foster played to the shooting guard position while Mo Watson, the top passer in the league handled the ball. Now it’s the former Kansas State standout’s turn, and the Blue Jay’s offense has been just as prolific. For those who’ve follow his career in college, this has been an incredible turnaround.
SR Andrew Rowsey – Guard, Marquette
2017-18 stats: 20.1 ppg 2.9 rpg 4.3 apg
He’s the second leading scorer in the Big East, but it’s hard to justify two players from a middle-tier team getting First-Team honors, when there’s great players on better teams. But the 5’10 guard is that “Bulldog” type that can will Marquette to improbable wins. He’s had four 30 point games, including 31 in a crucial win over Seton Hall.
JR Mikal Bridges – Wing, Villanova
2017-18 stats: 16.7 ppg 6.1 rpg 2.1 apg
Brunson is usually the first name that people think of when Villanova comes up, but Bridges has been just as good. He had a breakout game on national television in the Jimmy V Classic against Gonzaga, scoring a career-high 28 points.
SR Desi Rodriguez – Forward, Seton Hall
2017-18 stats: 17.6 pg 5.1 rpg 2.1 apg
Rodriquez has overtaken Khadeen Carrington as the top offensive option for the Pirates this year, shooting better across the board. He’s a matchup nightmare as an undersized power forward that can spread the floor, which makes him the x-factor for Seton Hall come March.
JR Jessie Govan – Center, Georgetown
2017-18 stats: 16.2 ppg 10.3 rpg 1.0 apg
He put up great numbers against the MEAC and SWAC schools in the non-conference, so we had to wait until January to see how legit he was. His numbers have dipped as expected, going for 13.5 ppg and 8.3 rpg, but he’s also been the sole reason for the wins, while keeping the Hoyas competitive against the better teams.
