Wisconsin Basketball: Remembering Frank Kaminsky’s collegiate career
Baby Steps: Kaminsky as a sophomore (2012-13)
The Wisconsin recruiting class of 2012 was centered around a five-star recruit from Sheboygan in Sam Dekker. According to just about every website, Dekker was a top-15 prospect. Wisconsin was thrilled to have such a talented player coming in but the rotation was still a question mark for Bo Ryan.
For starters, junior Josh Gasser tore his ACL before the season. He was expected to be a starter but Traevon Jackson got the nod instead. Thankfully, Berggren was back for his senior year and so were Evans and Bruesewitz. Marshall saw some starts and Dekker appeared with the starters three times.
For Kaminsky, he was a starter at the beginning that season. He played 17 minutes against SE Louisiana in the opener. Kaminsky then played 13 in a loss to Florida. The sophomore was pulled from the lineup after shooting under 40% in both games.
He recorded his first double-digit performance four games in, scoring 10 against Presbyterian. Kaminsky dropped double-figures three more times throughout the season, including a 19-point performance against Illinois. He only shot 44% from the field on the season but flashed range from deep, making 14 of his 45 3-point attempts (31.1%).
It was another solid overall year for the Badgers. They finished 23-12 and received a No. 5 seed. However, the Badgers were knocked off by the No. 12 seed Ole Miss and Marshall Henderson in the first round.
