NCAA basketball: Ranking the 30 Naismith award finalists
No. 10: Miles Bridges – Sophomore forward, Michigan State
2017-18 stats: 17.3 ppg 7.0 rpg 2.9 apg
Best season performance: 31 points and eight rebounds in a win at Illinois
Is it possible for the best player on one of the best teams in the country to have a quiet season? That seems to be the case with Bridges, with few games in the Big Ten for many to care about. In his sophomore year, the percentages are basically the same, expect the free throw shooting has been much better this time around.
Because of the extra depth in the frontcourt, Bridges has had to share the grabbing of the boards. But the best shooter on the team, combined with being the best play-maker, this sophomore has a claim to being the best wing in the country.
No. 9: Jock Landale – Senior center, Saint Mary’s
2017-18 stats: 21.9 ppg 10.4 rpg 2.1 apg
Best season performance: 26 points and 12 rebounds in a win at Gonzaga
Another player who leads their conference in both scoring and rebounding, Landale has put up the kind of numbers that only one other big can say they have. He’s shooting a ridiculous 65% from the field, even more impressive that he takes around 13.5 shots a night.
There’s not one player in the WCC that can guard him one-on-one, but even for those who mention conference affiliation, there aren’t many others from power leagues that could handle Landale either. With his masterful footwork, along with his ability to hit a jump hook like few others can, he’s a near guarantee 20 and 10 game.
