NCAA basketball: Ranking the 30 Naismith award finalists
No. 22: Caleb Martin – Junior forward, Nevada
2017-18 stats: 19.5 ppg 5.2 rpg 2.6 apg
Best season performance: 28 points in the win over Boise State
When Caleb and his brother transferred from NC State nearly two years ago, they were expected to be impact players. But Caleb in particular has become a Mountain West Player of the Year contender. Even more impressive has been his ability to stay on the floor, dealing with an ankle issue early on, then just missing one game recently after suffering an injury many thought would be a long-term problem.
After coming off the bench the first half of the year, he’s switched with his brother in the lineup, with both the individual and team results staying the same. Let’s hope that Martin can remain healthy for the NCAA tournament, so he can really put on a show.
No. 21: Carsen Edwards – Sophomore guard, Purdue
2017-18 stats: 16.9 ppg 3.8 rpg 2.9 apg
Best season performance: 28 points, five rebounds and six assists in the loss to Ohio State
One of the best unknown guards in the country, the “other” Edwards is the leading scorer on a Boilermakers team looking for a Final Four run. He’s a 50-40-80 guard, who turns the ball over just under 1.5 times a game. But as great as he has been, there’s another Purdue player with an even bigger impact.
