Getting Luke Maye going

There seem to be two kinds of games that the leading scorer for North Carolina tends to have. Great ones or bad ones. That was on display in just his last two games alone. Against the Hurricanes he went a paltry 1/15 from the floor. But he turned it around versus the Blue Devils, going for 17 points and 10 rebounds.

It’s been like that for Maye all year long, with games like 33 points and 17 rebounds against NC State, then a four-point performance at Clemson.

When he played Virginia, it was a miserable night for him. He shot 2/10 from the field, and couldn’t get anything going against Isaiah Wilkins, one of the best post defenders in all of college basketball.

The scouting report on Maye is clear. Rough him up a bit and play physical, and he’ll be thrown off all game. It’s not surprising that in games against physical frontlines this season, Maye has struggled. Whereas softer teams like Duke, he’s been able to get his offense going.

In order for North Carolina to win this, Maye has to be efficient with his shooting. He doesn’t have to go for 30, just not take 30 shots and make only four of them.
