Defense

As I mentioned, Arizona has the tools to be a formidable defensive squad. However, the execution on this end has been poor in many instances. The Wildcats cannot forfeit possessions on defense and expect to beat Buffalo. The Bulls’ offense is too good and will torch them if given the chance.

The main areas of defensive emphasis will be quick rotations, active help defense, and securing missed shots. In addition, the Wildcats will need to step up their pick-and-roll defense and close out on 3-point shooters. Buffalo likes to let it fly from deep and is effective from long range (37.1%).

Buffalo is talented and deep with scorers everywhere. Arizona must rotate quickly when the Bulls swing the ball around the perimeter. Also, the Wildcats’ defenders must keep their hands up to disrupt Buffalo’s shooters. If Arizona prevents Buffalo from developing an offensive rhythm, the Wildcats will ruin the Bulls’ night.

Arizona must also use its towering frontcourt to its advantage. Despite their size, the Wildcats have occasionally experienced rebounding issues. Buffalo will crash the glass, so Arizona must box out on every attempt to eliminate second-chance opportunities.

Moreover, the Wildcats need to be active in help defense, especially against pick-and-rolls. If Arizona defends the paint and rotates to disrupt perimeter shooters, it will be an insurmountable opponent for Buffalo.
