Providence Basketball: 3 keys to defeating Texas A&M
3. Which bench players will step up?
The Friars will need multiple players outside of the core four (Cartwright, Diallo, Lindsey, Bullock) to step up and produce. This formula was an underrated aspect of their Big East Tournament success.
Against Creighton, Isaiah Jackson provided a major second-half spark with his physical defense. He also made two crucial baskets, a contested fast-break layup and a top of the key three-pointer, which gave them the lead.
Providence’s two freshmen, Makai Ashton-Langford and Nate Watson, made a huge impact in the second half of the semi-final win over Xavier. Ashton-Langford started the second half after not playing in the first 20 minutes and provided great energy, poise, and sound decision-making. Watson took over in the post and had his best performance of the season.
Drew Edwards was the standout performer against Villanova as his defense slowed Jalen Brunson. He also had a pivotal and-one off an offensive rebound in the second half which gave the Friars a narrow lead.
Providence’s bench has been so inconsistent all season, but its play of late has been encouraging. Multiple players need to make an impact on both sides of the ball in order for Providence to defeat this talented Aggie squad.
My prediction is that both Maliek White and Nate Watson will be difference makers for the Friars. White is one of the team’s best shooters and has shown signs of being able to create his own shot. He should get 4-5 minutes first half stint and if he plays well, he could see over 20 minutes in this game.
Watson has really come along as the season progressed and could be a source of offense in this game. His defense has improved to the point where he no longer is a complete liability so if he can crash the boards, he should be in line for major minutes.

This is not the best matchup for Providence, but they still have a chance to win if they address these three areas. If the Friars can limit second-chance opportunities, hit perimeter shots, and receive bench production they should easily win this game.
