Reason 2: Efficiency

As referenced on the previous slide, the Lumberjacks take care of the ball on offense compared to their opponent. However, they are incredibly efficient as a team and utilize their possessions. As a team, Stephen F. Austin shoots 49 percent from the field. Yes, you are reading that correctly, that is not a typo. The Lumberjacks make nearly one out of every two shots they take. This has allowed them to have the ninth biggest scoring margin in the NCAA at roughly 13 points per game.

From an individual perspective, Stephen F. Austin has five players who shoot over 50 percent from the field. This includes their leading scorer Shannon Bogues, who makes 51 percent of his shots. They also shoot a nice 37 percent clip from three-point range too. Compare those numbers to Texas Tech’s 46 percent field goal percentage and 36 percent from three-point range. So, we will have two efficient teams battling it out.

However, when we look at the wider scope of things, there is only one team who limits possessions on the defensive end and maximizes them on the other end. That team is Stephen F. Austin and their efficiency will be the primary reason for their possible victory.
