NCAA Basketball: 10 best transfers from the 2017-18 season
SR Allerik Freeman – NC State Wolfpack
2017-18 stats: 16.1 ppg 4.2 rpg 2.6 apg
Although he was the starter and got good minutes at Baylor, Freeman was looking for an expanded role, knowing that he was at best the third option with the Bears.
So he decided to go to NC State, who under first-year head coach Kevin Keatts was going through a roster overhaul. With no clear go-to scorer for the Wolfpack, Freeman took advantage of the opportunity and excelled.
The grad transfer put up career-highs in many areas and had a few monster games to go with it. In the upset win at North Carolina, Freeman had 29 points while making all seven of his three-point attempts. He started out the season scoring in double figures in 16 of the first 17 games.
Besides taking the Wolfpack to an unexpected NCAA Tournament appearance by averaging over 22 ppg in his last eight games of the season, he saved his best performance for last by dropping a career-high 36 points in the first-round loss to Seton Hall.
Keatts looks to be the real deal and will likely have NC State back to the Big Dance soon, but the decision to bring in the former Baylor Bear was a great first move. This was a big win-win for both sides.
