NCAA Basketball: 10 best transfers from the 2017-18 season
SO Charles Matthews – Michigan Wolverines
2017-18 stats: 13.0 ppg 5.6 rpg 2.5 apg
When the former four-star recruit played just 10 mpg in his freshman season, Matthews had a decison to make. Either stay and risk rotting on the bench with better players coming down the pipeline, or go elsewhere.
He chose to go to Michigan, who was going to be without scoring guards by the time he could step out onto the court. The 28 point game against LSU in the Maui Invitational showed that the sophomore was going to have a good year.
Matthews was the second leading scorer on the season, as well as the team’s next best rebounder. From a defensive standpoint, the former Wildcat was solid, and proved that he was worthy of a top-100 ranking out of high school.
On the path to the Final Four for Michigan, Matthews was good in every game. He averaged over 16 ppg in the four battles, including producing 17 points and eight rebounds in the last game against Florida State.
Of all the players on this list, Matthews along with another player has two years left in college. The Wolverines hit a home run with a guy that will only improve as time goes on.
