SR James Daniel – Tennessee Volunteers

2017-18 stats: 5.6 ppg 1.4 rpg 2.8 apg

The last full season Daniel played, he was the leading scorer in the country with 27.1 ppg while taking 20 shots a night, in route to winning the MEAC Player of the Year Award.

However, the MEAC along with the SWAC is known as the worst conferences in terms of basketball talent, so how his game translates in the SEC was going to be interesting to observe.

The Tennessee Volunteers were in need of some scoring, so it seemed like a good fit at the time. Unfortunately for Daniel, the players who were already there played much better than expected, leaving the former Howard star on the bench.

Daniel finished the season nearly 22 points less than two years ago, with 5.6 ppg. He did get 20 minutes of playing time a game and did play well off the bench for a successful season for Tennessee.

While “bust” is a bit too strong with this one, Daniel’s contributions didn’t match the expectations beforehand and showed how big a talent there really is between the top and bottom conferences in D-1 basketball. Still, the NCAA Tournament appearance was a nice parting gift for a very good college career.
