Butler Basketball: 2017-18 player grades for the Bulldogs
An injury caused Sean McDermott to miss four games this season but he still had an excellent season. He showed significant improvement from his freshmen season and looked like a solid tertiary offensive option as a starter on the wing next to Martin. Although not necessarily a high-volume scorer, McDermott was the best 3-point shooter on the team and a versatile talent on both ends of the floor. For the year, he shot 43.1% from distance to go with 67.9% shooting inside the arc. This remarkable efficiency for his 6’6″ frame made him a dangerous offensive weapon.
In addition, McDermott used his length and size to be a tough defender and rebounder. His per game numbers might not indicate as much but he was one of the best wings in the country when it came to flying in for rebounds/tip-ins on the season.
Looking forward to the future, McDermott is going to need to take another step up as a junior. With Kelan Martin gone, he will become the full-time starting wing player. His 7.5 points per game average this season was solid as a role player but he will need to launch into double-figures next year. The forward positions for Butler next season will mostly be covered by committee and if that is so, McDermott will be the head chairman.
