Purdue Basketball: 2017-18 grades for the Boilermakers
By Shane Skeary
Ryan Cline (C-) – 4.0 points, 1.7 rebounds, 1.7 assists
It was a disappointing year for the junior as he took a step back from his sophomore campaign. Cline saw his both his playing time and shooting numbers dip – not ideal for a sharpshooter.
Cline averaged 5.4 points while shooting 41.3 percent from three and 42.5 percent overall in 2016-17, only to see those fall to 4.0, 39.6 and 39.5 this year. Still not bad splits, but Purdue basketball fans were hoping Cline would continue to rise and grow as a player.
That didn’t happen. His defense hasn’t dramatically improved as he still gets beat due to the lack of lateral quickness. Cline still plays primarily above the three-point line and doesn’t have a great first step or handle to blow by his defender to get to the rim, which is apparent by his six free throw attempts ALL SEASON. However, there are exceptions…
Here’s hoping Cline bounces back next year as a veteran leader and floor-spacing option for the Boilermakers.
