5. Utah State Aggies

The Aggies are only an option because of Coach Smith, who left South Dakota to come here. It’s not an unthinkable thing to do, as he is the man responsible for Mooney getting to this point.

Utah State actually has a good chance of being good next season, despite losing Koby McEwen, who was second on the team in scoring with 15.6 ppg. Sam Merill, who plays similarly to Mooney will come back, as well as most of the roster. Plus, they’ll get back 6’11 center Noert Janicek, who missed the season with an injury.

However, the odds are very low that he rejoins his “old” coach. The Aggies will be the fourth-best team in the Mountain West in the most optimistic view, in a league that’s getting one or two bids at the most in recent years. If Mooney want’s to go dancing, it won’t be with Utah State.

4. Arizona State Sun Devils

My worry with this situation is the style of play, which is weird saying considering how guard-oriented the team was this past season. The entire starting perimeter has graduated, and a host of frontcourt players are set to come in and become the focal points of the 2018-19 team.

Next year’s roster will be completely different, which means that Mooney will be going into an uncertain situation. While he definitely would start, the move might backfire production-wise.
