NCAA Basketball: Top 10 graduating seniors who will be missed the most
2. Grayson Allen – Duke Blue Devils
2017-18 stats: 15.5 ppg 3.3 rpg 4.6 apg
Career stats (142 games): 14.1 ppg 3.2 rpg 3.0 apg
It feels like Allen has been in college basketball forever, but that’s what happens when a player from Duke constantly gets into the headlines.
He was a role player in his freshman year, but came on strong in the Final Four to help win the national championship. From then on, he was thrust into the spotlight, becoming the next polarizing caucasian individual for the Blue Devils. That only became even more so when he became an All-American in the following season, averaging 21.6 ppg as a sophomore.
But Allen became enemy No. 1 in his junior year after a series of tripping incidents, as well as emotional outbursts. He was viewed as many for getting away with his actions without much discipline because he played for Duke. He struggled on the court as well, furthering the flames for those who disdained the Blue Devils.
Allen had the chance to really solidify his status as the most polarizing player in recent college basketball memory in the Elite Eight against Kansas, with a game-winning jumper attempt. It didn’t go down, and his career ended five minutes later.
No matter how people may feel about Allen, there’s no question that he brought an incredible amount of attention to the sport, whether it was good or bad. And despite the outbursts, he’s considered off the court to be a great kid. Considering how many freshmen are going through Duke right now, a four-year senior like Allen will be a lot rarer now and days.
