NCAA Basketball: Top 10 graduating seniors who will be missed the most
3. Joel Berry – North Carolina Tar Heels
2017-18 stats: 17.1 ppg 3.5 rpg 3.2 apg
Career stats (144 games): 12.7 ppg 2.8 rpg 3.1 apg
One of two national champions on this list, Berry was the Most Outstanding Player in the Final Four of the Tar Heels title run in 2017. He had 22 to lead all scorers in the win over Gonzaga.
After coming off the bench his freshman year, Berry has been the primary ball handler the next three years. Each season he helped North Carolina remain in the top-15 nationally, and became an All-ACC caliber player.
As a four-year college player, Berry is the exact opposite of what rival Duke has been doing at the point guard position. They have been rotating “one and done” freshmen over the years, and it has some positive and negative side effects. All of them have great talent but lack the kind of leadership and experience a player like Berry has. That’s why coaches love to have a veteran in the backcourt.
When it comes to Berry, he was never a 30 point scorer of someone who had highlight reel moves. But he was a winner, evident by the 118 total wins he amassed as a Tar Heel. It’ll be tough replacing someone who produced at that high a level.
