6. Tom Izzo – Michigan State Spartans

Career wins: 574 – NCAA Tournament appearances: 21

Best result: National Championship with Michigan State in 2000

Another coach who stayed the entire season, Izzo has the longest active streak of NCAA Tournament appearances with 21. The Spartans have spent just a couple of seasons since 1999 where they weren’t ranked in the top-15 at some point in the season.

With six times of making the Final Four, Izzo has cemented himself as one of the greats. The only slight smudge has been the past few seasons, where Michigan State has severely underacheived in the Big Dance. But they still made it, doing it longer than anyone else.

5. Jim Boeheim – Syracuse Orange

Career wins: 1027 – NCAA Tournament appearances: 32

Best result: National Championship with Syracuse in 2003

Over 40 years at one school has made Boeheim an immortal at Syracuse, amassing over 1000 wins. Last season was just the second time ever the Orange was never ranked in the AP Poll throughout the year, a complete rarity.

The past few seasons, could be viewed in a couple of ways. One would be that the program is in a bit of decline, taking a pair of controversial invites to the Big Dance. The other would be that they made some big noise once they got in, winning multiple games as a double-digit underdog. No matter what the talent is on the court, that legendary 2-3 defensive zone is still a mystery – even for the other coaching greats in the game.
