NCAA Basketball: Top 15 Players to Play for Tubby Smith
15. Jaye Crockett
Career stats: 9.9 ppg 5.4 rpg 0.9 apg
What’s incredible about Smith’s career has been the lack of pure stars throughout. He’s worked with less talent than I would’ve originally expected, which gave me even more respect for Smith as a coach.
The only two seasons where Smith finished under .500 was with Texas Tech, where he struggled to rebuild the program before leaving for Minnesota. The best player he had during his time with the Red Raiders was Crockett, who led the team in scoring and rebounding in the 2013-14 basketball season.
14. Jeremiah Martin
Career stats: 10.4 ppg 2.8 rpg 3.2 apg
Martin was the best player for him at Memphis, averaging 18.9 ppg this past season. His development helped the Tigers remain viable in the AAC, which was a big question after losing so many players the year prior.
13. Katu Davis
Career stats: 13.5 ppg 3.9 rpg 3.1 apg
Smith’s shortest stint was with the Georgia Bulldogs, but he still made an impact there, taking them to the Big Dance as well. The best player he had was Davis, who was the team’s leading scorer during their Sweet Sixteen run. He averaged nearly 16 ppg that season and helped Smith’s career totals, as well as his overall coaching resume.
