The “Our Recent Success with Our Old Coach” Fans

Notable Fans: UConn, Wisconsin, Florida…

One of the biggest traps that college basketball fans can fall into when supporting their team is arguing for continued success when the bulk of that success came under a different coach. Often times, fans will be optimistic after having the best run in team history.

Under Bo Ryan, the Wisconsin Badgers made 15 straight tournaments and never finished lower than 4th in the Big Ten. Billy Donovan essentially built the Florida Gators program into the second best in the SEC, winning two National Championships in the process. UConn’s Jim Calhoun is tied with Roy Williams and Adolph Rupp for the fourth most National Championships in history.

This great success can often give fans big heads moving into the following era, which often times don’t live up to expectations. Florida has won neither a regular season nor SEC Tournament Championship with Mike White. Under Kevin Ollie, UConn won a fourth National Championships with a core of Calhoun recruits, but has looked lost since then. Even, Wisconsin has fallen back a bit since Greg Gard took over for Ryan.

It is not that these schools aren’t good, or don’t show promise, but their fans’ constant need to remind others of the previous era can get old pretty fast.
