7. Randy Burns – Wichita State Shockers (2002-2005)

Career stats: 12.9 ppg 3.8 rpg 2.2 apg

After a 9-19 first season at Wichita State, Turgeon needed to turn things around soon, or face the hot seat himself. Burns came in his second season and made an immediate impact averaging in double-figures.

He did that all four seasons with the Shockers, including averaging 15.1 ppg his sophomore season. As more talent surrounded him, Burns didn’t need to score as much. But his impact and effort set the groundwork for the best yet to come for the program.

6. Jake Layman – Maryland Terrapins (2013-2016)

Career stats: 10.2 ppg 4.8 rpg 1.1 apg

There were five double-digit scorers on that 2016 Sweet Sixteen team for Maryland, but it was Layman who was the “heart and soul” for them. He not only was incredibly efficient on offense during that year and the others but his constant energy and hustle was a coaches’ dream as well.

5. Khris Middleton – Texas A&M Aggies (2010-2012)

Career stats: 11.3 ppg 4.6 rpg 2.0 apg

He only had one full season with the Aggies thanks to injuries, but Middleton showed why he was an NBA prospect. He scored in double figures in all but six games in 2011, including a 31 point game against Arkansas to help guide Texas A&M to the NCAA Tournament.

With only two double-digit scorers on the roster that season, Middleton’s contributions were vital to helping the Aggies make the Big Dance. He was one of the best pure scorers Turgeon’s ever coached.
