6. AJ Hammons – Purdue Boilermakers (2013-2016)

Career stats: 12.1 ppg 7.0 rpg 0.8 apg

The best defender in the Painter era for Purdue, Hammons was a three-time Defensive Player of the Year in the Big Ten, leading the conference in blocks a couple of times.

After three solid seasons where he averaged double figures, the big man was awarded a First-Team All-Big Ten Award his senior season. Hammons averaged 15.0 ppg and 8.2 rpg, including a career-high 32 points and 11 rebounds in a win over Nebraska.

The seven-footer was a throwback big man who stayed in the paint and protected it all four seasons before getting drafted to the NBA afterward.

5. Carl Landry – Purdue Boilermakers (2005-2007)

Career stats: 18.4 ppg 7.1 rpg 1.2 apg

He only spent two full seasons at Purdue (one with Painter), but Landry was easily the best player on the team for both of them. The Junior College transfer had to deal with a devastating ACL injury before his senior season, but he helped get Painter and Purdue rolling in 2007.

Landry was a First-Team All-Big Ten player his final year, averaging 18.9 ppg and 7.3 rpg, both leading the team. He was incredibly efficient from the floor, with his 60% field goal shooting ranking second in school history.
