ACC Basketball: 5 rising stars to keep an eye on in 2018-19
4. Temple “T.J.” Gibbs, Notre Dame
The Notre Dame Fighting Irish struggled a bit last season without Bonzie Colson in the rotation for much of the season but T.J. Gibbs weathered the storm a bit with his play. The 6-foot-3 guard went from starting one game in 2016-17 to starting all 36 contests for the Fighting Irish in 2017-18.
Gibbs averaged 15.3 points, 3.0 assists, 2.8 rebounds and 1.0 steals per game last season in 37.4 minutes of action per contest. He went from shooting 32.1 percent from 3-point range as a freshman to shooting 40.3 percent as a sophomore.
His 3-point shooting will be something to keep an eye on in 2018-19. He finished eighth in the ACC in 3-point field goals made (81) last season. Gibbs averaged 2.3 makes per game on 5.6 attempts from behind the arc. He also made at least one 3-point field goal in all but three contests. The most trifectas he made in a single game was six against the LSU Tigers back on Nov. 21, where he finished with 26 points in a 92-53 blowout victory.
The Fighting Irish have a lot to replace from their starting rotation as they return only two starters from last year’s squad, including Gibbs. Look for Gibbs to shoulder much of the load as the team’s floor general.
